Homeschooling in the New York Times

It’s been a rough few weeks for everyone, especially publicists pitching non-economy or -election related stories to the media! So I was stoked that Homeschooling found its way into a really interesting piece in the New York Times’ Home & Garden section this past Thursday: “The Anti-Schoolers.”

I went to Washington, DC for Columbus Day weekend and a bit after, visiting a good friend who happens to live up the street from a Montessori school. On my way to get coffee each morning (it is a testament to our good friendship that I didn’t snark about her tea-drinking, coffee-pot-free apartment all week), I would pass a cross-section of children on their way to school: some skipping happily ahead, some distracted by cars and squirrels, and several trying with all their tiny body weight to stay as far away from school as possible. In a city like DC or New York, a day out in the world does seem infinitely more exhilarating than a day at school. I’d be interested to see how starting school later, even when eventually enrolling in a traditional school, affects these New Yorkers.

I’m glad the Millmans, with their serendipitous world-view, were included in an article on such a great attitude towards young children’s education: breaking from the New York academic rat race, and allowing for some car and squirrel days.
